How to Target and Erase Storage Devices with WipeOS
Implementation Guide and Important Considerations
Overview
This guide explains WipeOS's storage device compatibility requirements and limitations for
enterprise data sanitization. Understanding these requirements is crucial for planning your
data sanitization strategy and required hardware setup.
Supported Storage Configurations
Direct Hardware Connections (Supported)
WipeOS can sanitize storage devices that have direct hardware connections to the host
system, including:
• Local drives in servers and workstations
• Storage arrays connected via Host Bus Adapter (HBA)
• Drives in server backplanes
• Individual drives in rack-mounted servers
Connection Types
Supported physical connections include:
• SATA connections
• SAS connections
• HBA connections (both copper and fiber)
Network Storage (Not Supported)
WipeOS does not support storage devices accessed through network protocols, including:
• Network-attached storage (NAS) devices
• Storage accessed via iSCSI
• Network shares (Samba)
• NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF)
• Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
• Any networked file systems
System Requirements
Host System Requirements
To successfully run WipeOS, the host system must have:
• Video output capability
• PXE boot support
• Direct hardware connection to target storage devices
• Compatible HBA cards (if wiping storage arrays)
Storage Array Considerations
For storage arrays without built-in video output or PXE boot capabilities:
• External server setup required
• Server must have appropriate HBA cards installed
• Direct connection between server and storage array required
Technical Implementation Notes
Operating Principles
• WipeOS operates at the hardware level
• Sends commands directly to storage devices
• Does not interact with file systems or network protocols
• Requires direct hardware access to storage media
Best Practices
• Verify hardware compatibility before deployment
• Ensure direct connections are available for all target devices
• Plan for external server setup if wiping storage arrays
• Test configuration with sample devices before full deployment
