Windows device management - Locked devices
Information on the locked status of a Windows device
The locked status of a device is stored in the Windows partition, within a specific file in a directory, and also in the registry. During imaging, we scan this data to load the OS Data section.
The lock status reflects an agreement between the device's information and Windows. The details of this process are beyond the scope of WipeOS. If you wipe the device and then reinstall Windows, it will function normally until you connect to the internet. At that point, a Windows service will check if the device is provisioned, create the necessary registry entries, and generate the autopilot.json file in the directory.
Similar to Apple's lock mechanisms, the lock involves communication between the device and the software provider's servers. Wiping the device only allows it to work temporarily until it reconnects to the internet.
The OS Data might contain information about who locked the device and possibly contact details for the sysadmin or IT support.
